Set in Salzburg, Austria in the late 1930s, The Sound of Music is the inspiring true story of Maria Rainer. She proves too high-spirited for the religious life and is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of the widowed Captain von Trapp. Her growing rapport with the von Trapp children, coupled with her generosity and spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain and they are soon married. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that the Nazis have invaded Austria and have demanded the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. In the show’s famous finale, the family narrowly escapes over Maria’s beloved mountains to the freedom of Switzerland.
