About the Show

Dealing with one family’s struggle to stay out of the Civil War, Shenandoah overflows with memories and emotions, strong characters, glorious harmonies, history-making events and exhilarating moments.

Based on the 1965 film, Shenandoah debuted on Broadway in 1975 and garnered six Tony Award nominations. This fresh new production by The Human Race Theatre Company explores the tumultuous time when family loyalties were tested and patriotism was redefined.

In Shenandoah, it is 1864 and the Civil War is raging. In the Shenandoah Valley, in northwest Virginia where his farmhouse sits in the middle of the ebb and flow of the fighting, Charlie Anderson, a widower, father of six sons and a daughter, is determined to keep his family out of the action, ready to hold his land and continue farming.
