Children’s Theatre’s Ensemble Company, made up of talented local high school actors, present The Elephant Man, a play based on the life of John Merrick.
Hideously deformed by a rare congenital disease, John Merrick was a main attraction of the 19th-century English freak show. But when public indecency charges barred him from further exhibition, Merrick was robbed, abandoned, and delivered to the London Hospital. There, under the care of a brilliant young surgeon and the friendship of a famous actress, this remarkably sensitive and intelligent man became the toast of Victorian high society. The play asks profound questions about faith, hypocrisy, mercy and what it means to be human.
Written by Bernard Pomerance and directed by Mark Sutton, The Elephant Man is recommended for ages 12 and up.
