About This Show

The Hamptons Shakespeare Festival presents the centerpiece of its 2003 season, Taming of the Shrew: Extreme. The production is a fresh take on Shakespeare’s classic battle of the sexes. Set in the unreal world of reality TV, the production explores and satirizes this recent cultural phenomenon using Shakespeare’s text. Six contestants have been chosen to play a multitude of roles, telling the story through gender-bending characterizations and spontaneous transformations. The irrepressible Kate is matched against the equally unruly Petruchio in a fierce competitive battle that is part spectator sport, outrageous farce, and psychological drama. This contemporary look at one of Shakespeare’s most controversial comedies explodes with wit and warmth, and a few surprising twists.
