About the Show

What do you desire? How is living in the contemporary attention economy shaping what we want and how we go about getting it?

Can We Talk?
is a new interactive performance on sex, spirituality, and attention
interrogating just that. In the piece, interactive artist, performer,
and experience designer Ben Freeman reads short essays that about the
transcendence and terror of casual sex in the age of hookup apps and our
oversaturated attentional environment. These essays are, by turns, hot,
heartbreaking, contemplative, and full of compassionate critique. The
titular invitation, "Can we talk?", is an invitation to gather in queer community and ask…are we ok? How can we
have sex that is free and freeing and serves to humanize rather than
line the pockets of the internet overlords that want us constantly on
our phones?

These essays are paired with Freeman's original music
and facilitated interactive prompts, inviting the audience to connect
to their own experiences and one another. These include prompts
conjuring a powerful sexual experience to mind and sharing just one word
representing it, writing a letter to oneself from the standpoint of
Pleasure, and talking out loud to the sacred/divine as if to a personal friend.
