The spirituality and symbolism of Mozart’s masterpiece, The Magic Flute, comes to life in this stunning production by Julie Taymor (The Lion King), featuring spectacular visual effects including flying birds, dancing bears, and the magnificent star-shimmering Queen of the Night.
In the summer of 1791 Mozart started working on an opera to be performed at a small theater run by an old friend, Emmanuel Schikaneder, who wrote the libretto of Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) and who also sang the role of Papageno. Although he had to interrupt work on this “Singspiel” (a popular form of entertainment in which musical numbers alternated with dialogue) for other commissions, he nevertheless composed some of his most sublime music for the story that includes both Masonic references and the tale of Tamino in his quest for love and enlightenment. Paul Daniel conducts.
