About This Show

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince is one of the most cherished stories among children and grown-ups alike throughout the world. Now it is reinvented as a magical new opera by Academy Award-winning composer Rachel Portman. The first female composer to win an Oscar, Portman is best known for captivating film scores including Emma, Chocolat, and Cider House Rules.
This stunning production by Francesca Zambello, director of City Opera’s recent Handel triumph Alcina and the Metropolitan Opera’s Les Troyens, is full of surprises. Water comes alive, foxes speak, and roses unlock endless secrets. The sets and costumes, designed by the late Maria Bjørnson (Broadway’s The Phantom of The Opera), are as colorful as a children’s pop-up book, bursting with whimsy and enchantment.
