New York City
In this musical adaptation of the most deliciously bawdy of Restoration comedies, a licentious London rake has been transformed into a Louisiana libertine — although what Harry Horner wants is still a piece of overripe fruit…or all of them. The award-winning team of lyricist-director Richard Maltby Jr. and composer David Shire (Closer Than Ever) cook up a delectable gumbo of Caribbean, Creole, and Cajun-inspired culture in a retelling of The Country Wife set in antebellum New Orleans. Horner, an upper-class philanderer, begins a campaign to seduce as many respectable ladies as possible, devising unique and hilarious way to do it. However, his scheme gets derailed by the arrival of a young and inexperienced “country wife.”
