About This Show

New Perspectives Theater presents Voices From the Edge 6.1, the 9th offering in its festival of new works by African American writers and performers. Since 1998, over 75 pieces–plays, spoken word performances, solo performances, ensemble and theatrical dance pieces–have been presented each February and September demonstrating the cutting-edge creativity and diverse voices emerging from this community.

VFE 6.1 begins with Lemon Meringue Façade by Ted Lange, a prolific actor of stage and screen, director and author, and a graduate of London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Mr. Lange is most recognized for his character, Isaac, on the television classic, Love Boat. The play takes us into the world of four blondes of the nineties who bake up a delightful pie full of laughs. They’re not white bred, they’re Lemon Meringue!

Reg Flowers, award-winning actor, writer and director premieres his solo performance piece Black Faggot Speaks, an evening of meditations on life from the perspective of a gay, black, liberal, Republican intellectual.

Salt in A Wound by Melissa Maxwell, a finalist in the 2002 Julie Harris Playwright Competition, chronicles the life-long tug-of-war battle between a mother and daughter reminding us all to follow our hearts and reach for our dreams.

The festival also has stories about murder, deceit, and inter-racial prejudice: Miss Ann’s Choice by Jamal Williams; a modern take on Antigone: Lo She Comes by Renita Martin; family secrets: Sins of the Mother by T. Bradlee Weston; a reminder that money doesn’t buy happiness: Brothers Kipling by J.E. Robinson; and burying the past: Miss Hattie Mae, Age 38, Goes Back to School by first-time playwright Joanna Reed.
