Visiting Hours explores the psychological, spiritual, and emotional connection between two people long separated by time and distance. After twenty years Aunt Martha living in New York finally succeeds in locating her nephew, Jack, who is in San Diego. To her delight, she finds a bright, funny, and sensitive young man with whom she has much in common. She soon discovers as well that Jack is HIV positive, and terminally ill. Estella, Jack’s cruel and erratic mother, who had initially caused and enforced their separation, is continually lurking nearby. Because of Martha’s recent car accident and his increasingly poor health, both Martha and Jack are for a while confined to their apartments where they employ modern technology in order to communicate. What seems at first to be a relentlessly tragic situation produces a positive outcome. Jack and Martha finally have the time and opportunity to get to know each other as adults and build a solid relationship. Memories start to surface, and both discover that they will be forever “kindred spirits.”
