About This Show

A new puppet piece by Catherine Jane Shaw, Universe Expanding, is inspired by reports that the Hubble Space Telescope is providing evidence that the expansion of the Universe is not slowing down, as had been expected. Instead, it is speeding up, prompting some to speculate that in the distant future, the sky will be cold and black, devoid of sight of any star.

Says Shaw: “Since the beginning we have looked to the sky, we’ve told time by the movement of the stars and sun, we’ve developed myths and religions in concert with its vast mystery. I want to explore all of this; the science, myth, philosophy and religion-all that is bound up in our idea of the Universe, and ourselves.”

Ms. Shaw plans to use a variety of puppet styles-from small rod puppets to giant inflatables, shadow puppets and more. Combined with original video clips and music it promises to be a spectacle of ideas and visual drama.
