Loosely inspired by the Greek tragedy of Oedipus, “Undone” takes place in a city neighborhood troubled by fear and violence, filled with characters on the brink of transformation. Valentina is a teenage girl in conflict with her mother Odile, a Latin American refugee with a hidden past who supports the neighborhood in a way she has never been able to support her daughter. Jefito, a blind man who sees what others don’t, unearths the buried stories inside the characters’ hearts and bursts open their relationships, forcing Valentina and Odile to reveal themselves to each other. Only then can the whole neighborhood begin to heal. Thome’s rich tapestry of speech and sound, in English and Spanish, resonates on many levels of meaning with wit and compassion.
