A reworking of the classic Kabuki tale The Scarlet Princess of Edo (1813) by Tsuruya Namboku, To Be Loved traces the story of a monk haunted by the death of the boy he loved, whose soul is reincarnated in the body of a young female prostitute–an uncanny turn of events which sets the events of the play in motion against a stark, futuristic landscape whose totalitarian attitudes toward freedom and sexuality bear a striking resemblance to our contemporary world.
