New York City
The 7th Sign Theatre Company presents The Just Assassins, by Albert Camus. Based on true figures and events, the play is a historical drama that focuses on a group of Russian Revolutionaries planning and executing the 1905 assassination of the Grand Duke Sergei, just one of many targets believed to be responsible for the disparaging state of their country. The plan seems flawless, until one of the members (Yanek) catches sight of two children in the path of the target. At this, he hesitates, a mistake that ultimately shatters the group and costs him his life.
By taking a closer look into the lives of these assassins (or “terrorists”, as Camus puts it), we see the life and death struggle between believing in an ideal and killing for it.
When times are desperate and we are certain of our goals, should there be limits to the actions we are willing to take? Or must we–at times–even in the face of desperation, hold on to a code of honor that may restrain us from accomplishing our goal? If the lives of two children stood between the freedom of your country and its death, could you take their lives?
