New York City
In 1790, Mary Girard was committed to an asylum after becoming pregnant for a man other than her husband. He paid to have her put away and declared legally insane. Throughout the play, Mary is taunted by “furies” (other patients in the asylum) who dance around her and act out the roles of various people from her past. The Insanity of Mary Girard is either a portrait of a truly sane person in the asylum who is mocked and jeered by the patients, or a chance to witness what goes on in the mind of a woman who has truly gone insane.
