About the Show

Artie Shaugnessy is a middle-aged zookeeper who finds himself caged in, living an unhappy existence in his Queens apartment with his slightly deranged wife, his rapacious mistress, and his fading dreams of being a songwriter. A visit from the Pope to New York City sets off a string of events that arrive, via a series of farcical moments, to a tragic conclusion. Winner of the 1971 Critics Award and the Obie Award as Best American Play, The House of Blue Leaves brilliantly combines hilarity, poignancy, outrageous stage aside and tragedy as only playwright John Guare can.

The House of Blue Leaves is presented by New York University, Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Acting Program and the Department of Design for Stage and Film; it is directed by Davis McCallum.
