About This Show

Finishing out the spring 2006 season of Evolve with a bang is Richard Caliban’s Teatro Slovak. A troop of Slovakian actors performs this exuberant, collage-like piece filled with dance and music. This emotionally charged experience contrasts American perceptions and misconceptions of Slovakian culture with the Slovakians’ reactions to our own culture. Inspired by the euphoria of coming to America — the overkill, the abundance, the chaos of possibility — Teatro Slovak reflects views of people who grew up in small Slovakian villages with medieval prejudices and modern day repression. Featuring dance, video, projections and trapeze, this work contrasts American realistic acting techniques with the broad, physical style of Eastern Europe. Live musicians perform with an array of instruments including accordion, cello, viola, upright bass, keyboards, congas, acoustic guitar, electric guitars and harmonica.
