Stealin’ Home by Fred Newman is a Castillo Theatre classic about an American hero, but unlike most classics, there’s nothing predictable about it. Newman’s paean to baseball mixes history and fantasy, sex, politics and the well-turned double play. Covering two critical decades of American history with three characters and seven scenes, Stealin’ Home avoids the obviously dramatic and plays with the possibilities inherent in coffee and conversation, in a drunken rant, in a tender moment with a lover. As in baseball, all these quiet, quirky moments add up to an exciting hit.
