Theater Volcofsky presents Shivah/Proper, written & directed by Matthew Seidman. A language-intense physically startling quartet where strangers sometimes a family undergo and voice repetitions of murder, marriage, sacrifice, the memory of loss and the loss of memory. Mourning. A four-person, one act blues.
An act of violence opens the play, and ripples like a gong through its world. Violence is repeated, opens brief refuges of tenderness, infects language, animates objects, cripples memory, refuses its own future. Familial roles are taken and then shed. This is a love story – of course: finally a circuit is broken. Finally?
