About the Show

Flying Fig Theater (NYC) and Dramatic Women (Santa Barbara) collaborate on the premiere production of Shirtwaist. The play explores the aftermath of the catastrophic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911 through the activities of five ghosts who still inhabit the building, which is currently owned by New York University. One of the ghosts becomes fascinated with a new inhabitant of the building, a visiting professor from Brazil, who in turn, falls for a young firefighter brought into the building by some ghostly mischief. Using music from and influenced by the period of the fire, Shirtwaist is a neo-Brechtian vaudeville that evokes the tragedies of the Triangle fire, and yet celebrates the positive changes that came out of it.
