A Folktale of a Boy’s Adventures in his Search for Freedom

Teatro IATI starts 2007 with a revival of the highly acclaimed children’s play Ruandi, by Cuban playwright Gerardo Fulleda-León. Winner of three HOLA awards, the play takes place in Cuba at the end of the 19th century. Ruandi, a young Cuban slave of Rwanda decent embarks on a journey to freedom. Determined to escape slavery, he leaves his home on a sugar plantation. He ventures through an enchanted forest inhabited by magical characters such as the Ceiba Tree, the Tortoise, and the Scorpion. Each character teaches him a lesson of strength, perseverance, and life.

The show is directed by Yanko Bakulic based on the original staging by Tony Díaz. Giant puppets are designed by internationally-known puppet artist Jesús Ruiz.
