About This Show

As part of the second annual Midtown Annual International Theatre Festival, Genesis Repertory Theatre Company, with its talent for creating new locations and time periods for its works, presents the Shakespeare classic Richard III, with a twist. Under the direction of Jay Michaels, this production sets Shakespeare’s greatest villian in a dark, dream-like world with never-ending war. Masks and marionettes are utilized to spotlight a world overrun by its basest of instincts. Like the classic Twilight Zone episode “Eye of the Beholder”, the only face seen will be that of Richard, who while he is called ugly is not; while he is called deformed is not; creating the question of what constitutes evil – those that are evil or those that hide behind pretense and cause. Richard will be followed by a marionette of what others claim to see in him – grotesque features and evil nature.
