New York City
Dharma Road Productions, Inc. presents the world premiere of re, a new dance work commissioned from four of Japan’s most talented young dance artists. Re-live. Re-use. Renew. Choreographers Akiko Furukawa, Aiichiro Miyagawa, Aya Shibahara, and Sakura Shimada (with videographer Ei Arakawa) whimsically and tenderly trace the soul’s journey through the endless cycle of birth, love, death, and reincarnation.
re is an experiment in collaboration, a jigsaw puzzle of movement vignettes and video projections. Each choreographer created a piece, and together they assembled the picture. Tenuously unfurling lifelines across the unsettled sea of 21st century life, they confront their dreams and fears in the common recurrences of every day life and seek invisible connections with the eternal rhythms of existence. re blends contemporary and classical dance forms with gestural movement and dramatic situations, juxtaposing lyrical and narrative modes of expression, solos and small group sections, and Japanese and American cultural sensibilities to create a visual idiom unlike any other. By turns exuberantly athletic and quietly dramatic, the choreography infuses images of beauty and subtlety with the compassionate (and at times delightfully off-kilter) humor, pathos and love of the human spirit struggling to be free.
