On February 6, Possible Fireworks features Jane Scarpantoni, who has become one of the most sought-after players and arrangers in alternative music, beginning with her contributions with the jazzy folk-pop quintet, Tiny Lights. A classically-trained cellist, she’s appeared and recorded with Kristin Hersh, John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards, R.E.M., Indigo Girls, 10,000 Maniacs, Nirvana and, most recently, Lou Reed. She is also a member of the incandescent Trio S with Doug Wieselman and Kenny Wollesen.
On March 5, Ned Rothenberg & Friends AND Peter Apfelbaum & Dean Bowman are a double bill feature. Ned Rothenberg splits the bill with Peter Apfelbaum (sax, piano & percussion) and vocalist Dean Bowman, who were snowed out in December. Performing on woodwinds and the shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute, Rothenberg leads the multi-metric funk ensemble, Double Band, and the chamber jazz group, Power Lines. His music employs horns in melodic ear-opening east-west combinations. At age 17, Peter Apfelbaum founded the band that gave birth to the sound now known as “world beat.” He teams up with Dean Bowman.
