Shishir Kurup’s Merchant on Venice is an ambitious, large-cast work, based on Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice. Offering a fresh perspective, Kurup sets his Merchant in a South Asian community in Culver City, California where hatred and intolerance among Hindus and Muslims have grown to a boiling point. Using music, verse and present-day South-Asian/American pop-lingo, the play explores how the preponderance of power in one sector of a community can marginalize a minority and provoke reactionary and retributive responses.
