New York City
Phoenix Theatre Ensemble continues its ambitious third season with the New York premier of Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s Maud – The Madness, the famous poet’s "little Hamlet," performed by Jonathan Tindle and directed by Niegel Smith.
Consumed in grief by his father’s untimely death, the hapless protagonist of Tennyson’s “little Hamlet” rages alone at a world of injustice and hypocrisy. When Maud, his beautiful childhood friend, resurfaces and gleams with the possibility for reconciliation and renewal, she becomes the one bright thing that may save him from the violent extremes of emotional triumph and despair. Met with critical outrage in 1855 as “Prose run mad,” Maud – the Madness exposes the fragile semblance of sanity we construct to survive.
