Stars, VIPs and well-wishers will gather February 7, 2005 for Love ‘n Courage, a benefit for Theater for the New City’s Emerging Playwrights Program that honors the works and spirit of TNC’s longtime friend and supporter, Robert Whitehead. The evening will feature readings and performances by Zoe Caldwell, Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee, Epstein & Hassan, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Reno, Marian Seldes, Elaine Stritch, Jerry Tallmer, Eli Wallach & Anne Jackson, Roberta Wallach and more. City representatives expected include Assembly Member Deborah Glick and City Councilmember Margarita Lopez and NYC Commissioner of Cultural Affairs Kate Levin.

Doors open 6:45 pm, Champagne supper is at 7:00 pm. Afterwards there will be dancing to the Reggae band Liv-i-Culture. The event is being chaired by Betsy von Furstenberg. The benefit committee includes F. Murray Abraham, Charles Busch, Zoe Caldwell, Ira Cirker, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Lenore DeKoven, Assembly Member Deborah Glick, Tammy Grimes, Mel Gussow, Dina & Ernie Harburg, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Judd Hirsch, Anne Jackson, Joyce & Seward Johnson, Frances Kazan, Romulus Linney, Councilmember Margarita Lopez, Charles McNulty, Grace Paley, Reno, John Roberts, Tim Robins, Gerald Rupp, Marian Seldes, Elaine Stritch, Jerry Tallmer, Jean-Claude Van Itallie, Glynn Vincent, Betsy Von Furstenberg and Eli Wallach.

The title of the evening deliberately suggests a double meaning: “encourage,” since this is what TNC does for emerging and mid-career playwrights, and “courage,” since that is what they need to exist in this world. “Love” may not be all you need, but a good dose of it won’t hurt.
