New York City
Electra–Daughter of Privilege is based on the plays Electra and Orestes, by Euripides. The Trojan War has ended, and following the murder of Agamemnon by his wife Clytemnestra–who killed to avenge the death of her daughter Iphigenia–a disowned and poverty-stricken Electra takes bloody revenge on Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthis for having murdered her father. The play not only explores this act of reprisal, but also what happens after–violence begets violence in a never-ending cycle of revenge and death. This adaptation is written and directed by David Gautschy, and performed by Teresa Hegji, who embodies all the characters of the saga including Electra, Orestes, Clytemnestra, and Helen.
