Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus is the classic tale of a man who sells his soul to the devil in return for the services of Lucifer’s arch demon, Mephistophilis. Dr Faustus is at the pinnacle of his academic career and is feted as a scholar and learned man when his overweening pride and arrogance drives him to study the art of necromancy. His conjuring leads him to Lucifer, who offers him a contract that gives him unlimited power for twenty-four years. Faustus eagerly signs the contract in blood, but then wastes his opportunities. With time running out, he makes a desperate attempt at repentance to try to avoid eternal damnation.
