About This Show

Lynx Ensemble Theater presents the world premiere of the new magisterial drama, Contracts, by Justin Deabler directed by Ari Kreith. The play chronicles the lives of four first-year law students taking a contracts course that serves as an allegorical representation of the unspoken contracts that they enter into in their personal lives everyday. As they negotiate the terms of these unspoken contracts — the expectations and obligations — that govern their intimate relationships, we go back to the surreal classroom, introducing new legal doctrines that parallel the dilemmas in our characters’ lives. As they struggle with problems of divorce, fidelity, disability, and role-playing in same-sex relationships, the students explore the difficulties these relationships pose to the autonomous self.

Post-show discussions throughout the run will feature Nadine Strossen, President of the ACLU, Professors Arthur Leonard and Susan Abrams of New York Law School, Professor Sarah Burns of NYU Law School, Professor Lennard Davis of SUNY Binghamton, writer Juan Battle, Sharon McGowan of the ACLU Lesbian & Gay Rights Project, and other notable figures. Boru Vodka will supply complimentary vodka drinks at all talk-backs.

There will be a benefit performance on Sunday October 31st at 2pm. A reception at Divine Bar (236 W. 54th St.) follows the performance with complimentary drinks.
