About This Show

Created by dancer, choreographer and director Maria Elena Anaya, Caracolas de un Mar de Fuego (Shells from an Ocean of Fire) is a compilation of various styles of dance and music from the tradition of Spanish classical and flamenco dance. This production highlights the diverse artistic roots of Mexican dance by juxtaposing several disciplines and dance genres. The program opens with “Entre Reinas y Corales” (Among Queens and Coral). Accompanied by music of YoYo Ma, three dancers lying on hammocks slowly awaken and begin to dance. The hammocks disappear as the dancers transform into royalty, donning majestic robes. Maria Elena Anaya enters and joins their dance. At the end of the piece, they strip her of her royal cloak and coral and leave her alone on stage with her castanets segueing into her dancing a dramatic “Andaluza” to the music of Manuel de Falla.
