About This Show

Originally commissioned by The Drilling Company Body Work is a hip-hop poetical riff on feminist male gaze theory in film and media, Web De Bois’ trope of the veil, and Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “baby got back”. A fun mix of beautiful women, a drag queen, groovy language, and complicated ideas.

SMOKIN’ WORD is a New York based non-profit company focused on helping to build the new genre of hip-hop and spoken word theatre through the production of plays, chap books, CD’s and other live events. It’s on-going
playwrights workshop WORDSHOP produced a reading at Manhattan Theatre Club. Participant’s works have gone on to be produced at Primary Stages, Nuyorican Poets Cafe and now LaMama. Smokin’ Word burning it up!
