About This Show

Everyone knows dating has always been fraught with problems – among them, embarrassing mishaps or encounters with people of dubious character. Even in today’s technology-saturated world, meeting that certain someone is a challenge. Beyond Therapy takes a wild ride back to the 1980s dating scene, and – with Christopher Durang’s brilliant writing – kicks it up a notch presenting dating without tech support, little mental stability and maximum emotional dysfunction! When Beyond Therapy premiered in 1982, the cutting edge of dating technology was the personal ad. It’s just such an ad that sets up the “anything can happen” moment of Prudence and Bruce’s first meeting in The Restaurant. Throw in Bruce’s gay lover Bob, Prudence and Bruce’s off-the-wall therapists Stuart and Charlotte, and a possibly sociopathic waiter, and what ensues is a farcical comedy that is timeless. Beyond Therapy is a fierce commentary on both dating and the 80s therapy craze, clever in its destruction of culture.
