Belize is a new musical-theater work by Paul Zimet (writer and director), Ellen Maddow (composer) and The Talking Band. In recent seasons at La MaMa, Maddow and Zimet have created the acclaimed productions of Star Messengers and Painted Snake in a Painted Chair (winner of thirteen 2003 OBIE awards). Belize, set in Central America and London in the 18th century, is a love story shaped by history and politics. Based on the true story of Edward Despard, an Irish-born Colonel in the British Army and Catherine Despard, an African-American woman who became his wife, the historical/hallucinatory mix of characters includes William Blake, Lord Horatio Nelson, and choruses of Black Mummers and the White Boys of Coolrain.
No 2:30 matinee performance on Sunday, January 9.
