About the Show

Assurbanipal Babilla, celebrated exiled Iranian playmaker, presents two tortured souls in a one-man show, Assyrian Monkey Fantasy. This theatrical fantasia comprises two monologues: Confessions of a Latter Day Temple Prostitute and My Windows in Brooklyn or Welcome to America.

Confessions is the tale of Dora Dewberry, an aging, sex-starved film actress told in first person by a man in a suit. How much of Dora’s lurid story is real and how much does it matter? My Windows in Brooklyn finds an Iranian illegal immigrant holed up in a makeshift apartment, terrified of being deported. The immigrant glimpses life through his windows, where he sometimes observes a Presbyterian minister who bears an uncanny resemblance to Ernest Hemingway. When a mysterious woman demands entry into the narrator’s room and begs him to save her marriage, a tragicomedy of Biblical proportions ensues.

This performance is presented as part of the New York International Fringe Festival.
