About This Show

Album is an exciting collective that pairs five of America’s premiere playwrights with five brash up-and-coming directors. Each writer was charged with responding to one of the twenty-five 2005 Time magazine “Photos of the Year.” Playwrights include Zakiyyah Alexander, Andrew Case, Michael John Garces, Rogelio Martinez, and Lucy Thurber. Directors are Adam Arian, Isaac Butler, Shoni Currier, Eliza Hittman, and Chris Maring. Witness the explosive results…

Photo # 7 – Zakiyyah Alexander works from a photo depicting the buried body of a Pakistani student, a victim of the recent earthquake. Alexander is a New Dramatists resident playwright and recipient of the Drama League New Directors/New Works fellowship. She earned her MFA in playwriting from Yale.

Photo # 6 – Andrew Case riffs off the photo of an overgrown Mississipi home wracked by Katrina. Case is a member of the Primary Stages New American Writers Group and received a Manhattan Theatre Club playwriting fellowship. His play PACIFIC was produced at Steppenwolf.

Photo # 5 – Michael John Garces writes from a photo showing a little girl made homeless by Hurricane Rita. Garces is a resident playwright at New Dramatists as well as the recipient of the Alan Schnieder Directing Award and the Princess Grace Fellowship.

Photo # 18 – Rogelio Martinez captures the image of passengers on a civilian aircraft staring at the plane’s newest cargo: the coffin of a soldier who died in Iraq. Martinez is a former resident playwright at New Dramatists and the recipient of an NEA/TCG grant as well as the Princess Grace Fellowship.

Photo # 3 – Lucy Thurber writes in response to a Katrina-devastated house that is simultaneously flooded and ablaze. Thurber is a member of New Dramatists and 13P. She is the winner of a Manhattan Theatre Club playwriting fellowship.
