About This Show

Trial By Water, written by the ferociously bright, young talent Qui Nguyen, is a searing account of the odyssey of two Vietnamese teenage brothers who are forced to escape their homeland in the middle of the night. As they set off for America with the promise of “a better life,” their voyage at sea becomes an allegory of desperate choices. When the boat’s engine breaks down, their journey turns into a nightmare. Faced with unthinkable acts of survival, each brother confronts his own issues of mortality and morality. The work is a truly inspiring piece of theater which gives insight into the history and identity of many Vietnamese Americans. Based on actual events, Mr. Nguyen upends the traditional narratives of the Boat People, eschewing stereotypes for a gritty, nuanced, and honest portrayal of the many compromises immigrants must go through to search for permanent moorings.
