Sweeney Todd

Stephen Sondheim’s murderous modern masterpiece returns to City Opera in a razor-sharp production, originally directed by Hal Prince. The show features music & lyrics by Sondheim, with a book by Hugh Wheeler, from an adaptation by Christopher Bond. The production stars Elaine Paige and Mark Delavan.

Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, is out to exact vengeance on the judge who sent him to prison. First he must set up shop, shave a few unlucky customers, and join forces with a local barmaid whose meat pies have mysteriously become the tastiest treats in London.

Hailed as one of the greatest works of musical theater ever written, Sweeney Todd cuts through the air with acerbic wit, heartbreaking melodies, and haunting dissonance.
