About This Show

Basil Twist’s Petrushka, featuring Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka, Suite for Two Pianos, will return to Lincoln Center as part of the Great Performers New Visions series, “Stravinsky Onstage.”

Petrushka centers around the titular tragic clown, who comes alive as nine hidden puppeteers combine Czech and Japanese puppetry techniques in a tour de force of puppet wizardry. Stravinsky’s score will be performed by sisters Julia and Irina Elkina in the two-piano version. The duo opens the program with Stravinsky’s “Sonata for Two Pianos.” Petrushka was commissioned by Great Performers and had its world premiere at Lincoln Center in May 2001.
