About the Show

Choreographed and performed by Nora Chipaumire, Dark Swan is a solo dance piece that follows the perilous journey of one woman as she loses her bearings, her kin and her country, descending into the borderless world of survival. Dark Swan is inspired by the legendary solo The Dying Swan (1907), danced by Anna Pavlova and choreographed by Michel Fokine to music by Camille Saint-Saens.

Nora Chipaumire was born in Mutare, Zimbabwe during the chim urenga chechipiri, or second war of liberation. A self-exiled artist now based in New York, she has been a featured dancer with the world renowned Urban Bush Women for three years. Nora has been described as “a defiant boxer
staring down an unseen enemy” (Claudia La Rocco, Associated Press).
