About This Show

“Romantics New and Old” will highlight masterpieces of the 1820s, 1984, and 2012: Schubert’s “Quartettsatz” (1820) and Giuliani’s “Grand Concert Variations” (1829), Piazzolla’s “Tango Suite for Two Guitars” (1984), plus the New York Premiere of the new version of Nuevo Tango master Daniel Binelli’s “Sexteto Buenos Aires” (2012) –a scintillating journey through the intensity and passion of the tango music world.

Praised by The New Yorker as “a fresh and vital young participant in what is a golden age of American string quartets,” the Daedalus Quartet has established itself as a leader among the new generation of string ensembles. In the ten years of its existence the Daedalus Quartet has received plaudits from critics and listeners alike for the security, technical finish, interpretive unity, and sheer gusto of its performances.

Hailed as a “revelation to hear” by The Washington Post, the Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo’s phenomenal musicianship places them solidly at the top of their field. Their innovative programming, matchless technique and ensemble precision, combined with their commitment to expanding the repertoire for guitar duo make them a standout chamber ensemble in every way. Highlights of the Duo’s season include the world premiere of “Concierto Buenos Aires” composed for the Duo by Daniel Binelli with l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Reims in France and with the Virginia Symphony (JoAnn Falletta, music director).
