August Strindberg’s Miss Julie
concerns the eponymous young aristocrat, whose perverse nature has already driven her fiancé to break off their engagement. During the course of a Midsummer’s Eve, she pursues and effectively seduces her father’s valet, Jean (Paul Casali), consequently breaking his engagement to Christine, the cook (Maureen Van Trease). Featuring two dance interludes, this now classic drama, one of the first to infuse naturalism and complex character psychology into the theatre, remains one of the most potent and influential plays of the last 120 years.
