About the Show

James Sewell Ballet is readying three new dances for its return to the Joyce. A world premiere, still to be titled, features Sewell in three roles: choreographer, solo performer, and sound engineer (Sewell comes from a family of musicians). In “Schoenberg Serenade,” the asymmetrical lines and fractured movements of Sewell’s choreography give visual life to the dissonant music of Arthur Schoenberg’s “Serenade.” Music also drives Sewell in his “Opera Moves,” a choreographic interpretation of scenes from 11 operas by Bizet, Puccini, Mozart and Saint-Saens, among others. Five of the scenes are form Sewell’s original 1991 work and the other six are from the 2007 update.
