About This Show

The New York City Opera presents Puccini’s Madama Butterfly
Exotic. Romantic. And ultimately tragic. These qualities, combined with the brilliance of Puccini’s score, have made Madama Butterfly one of the opera world’s most beloved classics.
An impoverished geisha falls in love with Pinkerton, a handsome young American sailor. She denies her religion, family, and friends, sacrificing all for an ungrateful husband who then callously abandons her. Forlorn and desperate, poor Butterfly waits three long years before Pinkerton finally returns to claim the one thing she loves more than life itself.
