If you think French operetta means catchy tunes, lilting waltzes, and joie de vivre at center stage, you are completely correct. But the masters of the genre-the protean Offenbach and his colleagues-went beyond mere entertainment and created a unique kind of musical theater.
This engaging multimedia program offers a fresh look at French operettas. Through a combination of live performances, video and a verbal presentation, we explore the genius of the composers and librettists who created these sparkling gems of the French stage.
The evening includes excerpts from Offenbach’s La Vie parisienne and La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein and works by Messager, Yvain and Guitry, performed live by soprano and baritone with piano accompaniment.
