About This Show

Based on Alexandre Dumas the Younger’s classic tale of forbidden love and ultimate redemption, La Traviata is the perfect romantic opera. From the very first moment to the heartbreaking ending, Verdi’s genius reigns triumphantly.
This opulent City Opera production, originally staged by renowned soprano Renata Scotto, is set against the glamour and decadence of 19th-century Paris. Featured this season as Violetta, one of opera’s best-loved soprano roles, is Maria Kanyova.
The young, handsome, and naive Alfredo Germont has fallen deeply in love with the beautiful courtesan Violetta Valéry. At first unwilling to make a commitment, she is overcome by his innocence and sincerity. Defying the social conventions of the day, they pursue a liaison that leads to truly tragic consequences.
