About This Show

Sounds of turn-of-the-century café society swirl in Puccini’s rarely performed bittersweet lyric comedy. With its romance, disguises, and cornucopia of waltzes, this fleet-footed work moves with the ease of a light-hearted Viennese operetta.
“In every heart, there lurks the devil of love.” These words, rhapsodized in the opera’s lively opening scene, prophesy the fate of Magda, a sentimental courtesan claimed by the wealthy Rambaldo. Though he showers her with everything money can buy, Magda finds true happiness with the young Ruggero. Unaware of her disreputable past, Ruggero proposes marriage, leaving Magda to choose between living a lie and bidding farewell to the one and only love of her life.
