About This Show

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Presented by Smokin’ Word Productions, D’bate is an idea firmly based on the format of Lincoln-Douglas Debate (stemming from the mid-1800 tradition) with a splash of 21st century hip-hop culture. Lincoln-Douglas is value-based debate where a resolution is presented and one person takes an affirmative stance while the other takes a negative stance on a given subject. In D’bate the debaters use the forms of poetry and freestyle to defend and explain their opinions.

D’bate teaches the audience and the performers how to express their ideas, listen to opposing views and come up with a conclusion that they can believe in and is defendable. The use of spoken-word gives Lincoln-Douglas some much needed pep and the freestyle format brings in pressure and a competitive, interesting element into the debate, thus keeping the audiences attention while educating them at the same time.

Part of The UnConvention: An American Theater Festival.
