“Crazy About You: A Comedy About Sigmund Freud and Psychoanalysis” is a new romantic comedy by award-winning playwright William Cane. Based on a true story about what happened when Sigmund Freud allowed his friend Dr. Wilhelm Fliess to perform surgery on Emma Eckstein’s nose under the misguided assumption that it would cure her of hysteria. Although Fliess loves Emma, he almost kills her with the operation. This is the first time that the Unconscious appears onstage in a theatrical production. Throughout the play, the Unconscious tries to force Freud to stop writing and lecturing about it—because it wants to work unseen and undiscovered by the mass of humanity! The Unconscious also tries to drive Freud mad by making Dr. Sandor Ferenczi fall madly in love with Freud’s sixteen-year-old daughter Anna.
