About the Show
Amrikayee is the story of a close knit family navigating post pandemic, post Trump America and at it’s heart, a son who wants to make his father proud.
Faced with a spiritual dilemma, the ghost of Rumi, in translating Rumi for renown southerner Coleman Larks, Ali retreats to his childhood home in DC. Ali needs to make a choice: does he keep his job and follow the path to being a commercially popular poet? Hold onto his artistic principles, stay broke, and take a stand? Or take over the family business? Amrikayee examines whether Rumi’s been whitewashed for hipsters, if Drake rapping in Arabic is cultural appropriation, the cost of the American dream, and what it means to be the Iranian flavor of American.
